Resources for Picture Study

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

Picture Study seems to be an easy subject to overlook - or even drop - when juggling a full schedule. However, in just a few minutes each week (seriously!) you can easily shape your child's appreciation of the Masters and give them a working knowledge of some of the greatest art pieces in history.

It doesn't have to be complicated!

If you'd like to know more, grab your coffee and listen to a great explanation of what a picture study looks like in a CM education.

I love using Ambleside Online's Artist list and schedule to give me a well-rounded list and an intentional, scheduled approach to covering some of the great Art Masters. All of the names and pieces are planned out for me, and this is also a wonderful FREE resource to viewing the pictures as well.

Using that list of artists, I opt to use some other resources as well - and here are my favorites:

Picture Study Portfolios - this is by far my favorite resource and worth every penny. I recommend studying one artist per term (3 artists per year), but even if you only get to one, I highly recommend investing in these packs.

Anholt's Artist's Books for Children - this is a delightful series of books

However, don't feel like you must own a book on the artist to actually do a picture study with your children. All you need is internet access and a few moments to quietly and proactively observe.

To do a 'picture study' means that you look closely at the work of art and ask yourselves questions about it.

What does it remind you of?

What was the first thing you noticed?

What color caught your eye first?

My goals in engaging in picture study with my kids are simple - I want to build their power of observation by slowing down and truly absorbing the picture, to become familiar with the basic styles of paintings, and to hopefully be able to recognize certain paintings and know the painter.

Stay tuned for updates and check back as I continually add to my list!

If you have a recommendation, please contact me so I can check it out!
